Jenna's 6th Birthday

Jenna's birthday looked a little different this year, only because we had no official "party". In fact, I spent most of the day cleaning and running to the store. But we managed to still make it special for Jenna, and she's so easy to please that I don't think she missed having a big party.

Her request for breakfast was bread with peanut butter, and a smoothie. Easy peasy!

She had chosen her birthday outfit a week in advance, and was excited to finally put it on. In typical Jenna fashion, she wore leggings and a cute cozy top.

Jenna shares a birthday with Grandma Linda, so she came over for a little visit (and folded my laundry....on her birthday. Thanks Mom)

Jenna's cousins did a quick drive-by and gave her an adorable little toy dog house for her stuffed animals. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture.

We always let our kids choose whatever they want for their birthday dinner. Jenna's brothers would undoubtedly choose to buy food. Jenna had a very specific request for ground beef, rice, and steamed broccoli and cauliflower topped with butter and salt. Told you she's easy to please!

She also requested I make a "vanilla cake with pink whipped cream and white frosting and my name written in pink on top"
After Grandma Jan came by and brought her some fun gifts, it was time to blow out the "6" candle and have our little party.

Each of us went around the table and prayed for Jenna before we ate dinner and it was really special!

Time for presents!
We debated up until the last minute about Jenna's gifts. I had planned to give her my American Girl Doll (Felicity) but unfortunately she was still up in the attic, so we decided to save her for Christmas. Instead she got a new bed comforter set and a pink scooter from us.

After that the real fun began....pin the horn on the unicorn! Seriously, best $3 I spent at Target.

We each took turns being blindfolded and spun around. When I brought up "Pin the tale on the donkey", I realized my kids didn't really know about that game! Jeez, made me feel old.

Jenna had a fun day filled with her favorite foods, new presents, and fun with her family. And now our baby girl is 6!

Jenna: Six

Oh my Jenna girl, Happy 6th Birthday!

HOW are you getting so old? I truly just want to pause time with you. I've wanted to do this since you were a baby, but still can't figure out how.

You continue to be my sweet girl and by far my "easiest" child.
You're my child who I can tell to do something, leave the room for a while, and come back to find you still content, just doing your own thing. And what are you doing most of the time? Drawing adorable pictures! Seriously, you spend SO much time drawing and using your imagination. I'll be in the middle of reading a book for school to everyone, and you'll suddenly jump up to illustrate what you just heard. I have stacks of your precious drawings that I want to keep forever!
Speaking of school, this is your second year being homeschooled and so far I've heard no complaints. You do our work with a good attitude (most of the time), and the only time you struggle is when I have to pull you away from playing to begin work. You're learning to read, and you can add and count up to 100. I read out loud to you a LOT, and lately I have been hearing some pretty big and impressive words coming out of your mouth. I think you're going to have an excellent vocabulary. School at home means a lot of time with your brothers, and life can get a little hectic with 3 brothers. Sometimes we have to just stop and appreciate that we have each other.
Jenna, you are still a wonderful combination of girly girl and slight tomboy. You love a pretty dress, unicorns, and anything pink.
But you also are heavily influenced by your brothers.
(That time you dissected a squid last month and didn't even flinch)
You're full of sugar and everything sweet.....but you have this crazy laugh that sounds quite evil! You are also incredibly goofy and make the worst faces.
Things I love about you: Your love for veggies! (When I asked what you wanted for your birthday breakfast, you requested cucumbers!), You are gentle, The way your legs peddle SO fast when you ride your bike, Your adorable profile, The way your face lights up when I tell you anything even remotely exciting or good, The way you play with Andrew.

Some things you love: A splash of cream on your cereal and oatmeal, Playing Polly Pockets, Pleading for just one more book read every night, Eating a salad outside in the sunshine with me, Scrunchies and Leggings.
Jenna Mae Nullmeyer you a such a special gift to our family. God knew we needed a girl right in the middle of all your brothers. I pray God blesses you this year as a big 6 year old! Love you girly!

Ryan's Broken Finger(s)

Unfortunately Ryan broke one (probably two) of his fingers last weekend. It happened a few hours after his last baseball practice of the season. (hey, convenient timing!)  Lucas said or did something that made him angry, and he took a swing at him. Now, I don't seriously think he was trying to make contact, but rather just intimidate him. But he swung so wildly that he accidentally punched the edge of the kitchen counter instead. I was in the other room and I heard the thud followed by Ryan's screaming and howling. I immediately knew he was in serious pain. I can tell the difference between an "I'm crying a lot to get attention for my minor injury" cry vs "This really really really hurts" cry. Unfortunately it was the latter.

I got Ryan some ice and after a little while his knuckles looked like this. Some bruising and swelling.

I also noticed that his ring finger knuckle seemed pushed down. It's a little hard to tell, but when he tried to hold his hand flat, I could feel all his knuckle bones except for the ring finger. We watched his hand over the weekend and then called the doctor on Monday.

After a video visit, the doctor sent us in for an x-ray on Monday. Afterwards, they put Ryan's hand in a splint and told us to keep it on until we heard the results.

At this point I was feeling bad for Ryan, but at the same time fully ready for him to experience the natural consequences of his actions.

That afternoon we heard back from the doctor that the bone right below Ryan's right ring finger knuckle was in fact fractured. Unfortunately, the soonest they could schedule the next appointment was Friday. And it wasn't even an in-person visit! Our video visit on Friday was quick. Ryan's hand was even more swollen, and the doctor confirmed that his assistant would call us to schedule an appointment to get his cast put on. When she called and said the soonest appointment was not until the following Tuesday, I did complain a bit. It had already been a week since Ryan broke his finger! The little bit of pushback worked.....they called me right back and told me we could come in immediately to get the cast put on that afternoon.

First the doctor showed us Ryan's x-rays, and when he left the room I obviously took some pictures!

He casually mentioned that "his pinky finger is also probably broken, but I don't really care about that one". Then came the bad news. Ryan's hand would heal just fine, but first his knuckle bone needed to be manually popped back into place. He offered Ryan a numbing shot before doing this, but Ryan declined.

We waited 45 minutes for the doctor to call us back in for the procedure, and Ryan second-guessed his decision. He was pretty nervous, but I assured him it would be really quick and then the pain would be over. Again, it's hard to tell but you can kind of see that he's missing his ring finger knuckle bone.

The procedure to pop his knuckle back into place was not actually quick! I figured it would be a quick pop! and then done. However, it was more like a really long 30 seconds. Ryan was in agony, squeezing my hand and crying and begging the doctor to stop. Oh it was so hard to watch him go through that. Once it was over, they quickly put his hand under a live x-ray machine to confirm it had worked. Thankfully it had!

With that part behind us, we finally got the cast put on. Ryan chose dark blue (without glitter!). The guy who put on the cast had a really funny sense of humor and told us some wild stories that confirmed things can in fact always be worse. (He recently had a boy come in with 2 broken arms and 1 broken leg from dirt-biking. Officially crossing that off the list of things my boys are allowed to do)

Once the cast was on but still soft, the doctor applied pressure to the spot below Ryan's knuckle, in order for the cast to harden with that part pushing in on his finger. I could tell this was incredibly painful for Ryan. There is a big finger indent in his cast now. When it was all over they told Ryan he was a pretty tough kid. I guess most kids opt for the numbing shot. I remember when he was 3 years old in the hospital with a skull fracture, and the nurses would comment about how strong he was, and how well he handled pain. But then the minute they left the room his stoic face would crumble and he would fall apart in my arms.

We received the good news that Ryan only needs to wear his cast for 4 weeks! Ryan got In-N-Out for dinner, some motrin, and a couple nights spent sleeping near Mom and Dad. He is complaining a lot about the inside of his cast being really uncomfortable (he's extremely sensitive to tags and things like that on his clothing), so we're trying our best to keep him comfortable and give him some extra attention.  I hope the next month goes by quickly for him.

Halloween 2020

We kicked off Halloween weekend by visiting a local house here in Rocklin that went ALL OUT with their decorations! It was quite impressive, and we spent a long time standing there, admiring all the hard work that went into it.
Halloween was on a Saturday this year, so that was fun! Our original plan was to do a candy scavenger hunt at home instead of trick-or-treating. We were then going to eat a fun dinner and watch a Halloween movie. Well, one thing led to another and we ended up trick-or-treating all around our court as well as another one nearby. There were a lot of people out passing out candy in very creative and non-traditional ways.
This year Andrew went as Lightning McQueen, Jenna as Snow White, and the boys were 2 unknown characters. I mean,  I'm sure they knew who they were dressed as, but I have no idea. We slacked on getting them costumes and bought these very last minute from Target. Yea, it's been that kind of year.
We did great carving our pumpkins!

We headed out to "just one or two houses".
After a few courts we spotted the giant moon in the sky! Can you see it?
Back at home we hid candy all over the house downstairs and then let the kids run around and go crazy finding it. Sometimes new traditions can be fun!
Our night also included Chipotle for dinner, and a fun family movie of 3 Ninjas (circa 1992!). It ended up being a really fun Halloween, despite the way everything is going in the world right now. Now someone please get all this candy out of my house!
