Chatterbox

People often assume Ryan doesn't talk much because he is so shy. And while he is pretty much mute when around people he doesn't know well (or even people he sees every week), he is a chatterbox at home.
I remember being this exact same way as a child. I would clam up in public and then my Mom couldn't make me stop talking once I go home!

I try really hard not to just brush off what Ryan is saying....but sometimes his questions are so constant that I find myself nodding and saying things like "Uh-huh, that's interesting. I don't know buddy. Maybe Daddy knows the answer to your question".

Recent questions Ryan has asked me:

How does water melt?

Is fire hotter than the sun?

What are germs?

I try my best to give simple answers that satisfy his curiosity, but let's be honest.....I have no idea what I'm talking about!

  1. Dude, that's what your computer/phone are for!
    1. Ice molecules are moving slowly because they don't have much energy. If you give them heat, that's energy, so they move around a lot and the ice loses its solid form.
    2. Nope. Sun is hotter. Sun is as hot as lightening because it's made of plasma which is hotter than fire.
    3. Germs are tiny organisms, made of a single cell. They attack other cells and multiply inside of them, then break out, killing the cell.

  3. I know you guys don't do much TV, but Sid the Science Kid on PBS is a great age-appropriate show with no "debatable" science topics, at least not that I've seen. Maeve loves it, and it answers lots of kids questions, like what makes it rain, why do some balls bounce higher than others, why does fruit go bad, etc.
