Messily Occupied

Sometimes I let Ryan do things that are extremely messy just so that I can have a moment to get one little thing done. To make a phone call. To nurse Lucas. To breathe. To think.

Ryan adores playing with water, and could potentially spend hours "washing" the dishes. Yes, water does end up all over the counter and floor, but sometimes it's worth it.
Another recent discovery? Peeling eggs. I had a few boiled eggs I needed peeled so I assigned the task to Ryan. This kept him occupied for quite a long time.
Any other ideas for keeping busy kids quietly occupied?

  1. Hi,
I've been a long time reader of your blog and have never commented until now.
My name is Jane, I'm from Melbourne Australia and have a 3 year old son.
Scooping and pouring keep my son occupied for ages - rice, dry pasta, dry lentils, dry beans, corn kernels are just a few ideas. Just put whatever you choose in a plastic tub with some spoons and empty containers and Ryan should be busy for awhile!
Also, pom poms are great - put lots in a container with tongs, scoops, ice-cube trays and empty containers and have him use the tongs to fill the trays with pom poms. Another great idea, if he's into diggers, is a shallow tray of sand with diggers and dump trucks.
Yes, these ideas make mess, but it's nothing a quick sweep doesn't fix. Like you said, it's so worth it for both the developmental benefits for the child and your sanity!!
I'd love to hear how Ryan likes them if you try any of these ideas...
