Slow Grower

At Ryan's last appointment his Dr. recommended we supplement Ryan's feedings with a non-dairy formula. He suggested this because Ryan's weight gain has been pretty slow. The average baby gains about 1 ounce per day. Ryan has been averaging half an ounce per day. Over the past week Ryan gained 3 ounces, so the formula isn't really contributing to a larger weight gain, but rather helping his gain to remain steady.

He was born at 8 lbs, 6 oz. At 7 weeks of age last week, he weighed 9 lbs, 15 oz. Not a big gain, right? Well apparently everyone else has noticed as well, particularly strangers. People always mistake him for being younger than he is. Yesterday at the grocery store a woman came up to me and exclaimed "Oh a newborn! How cute!"

I said "Thanks, but he's actually almost 2 months old".

She said "Oh wow. Was he a preemie?"

I said "Nope. Full term. He weighed a healthy 8 lbs, 6 oz at birth"

I think her eyes almost popped out of her head when I said this.

The more comments I get about his size, the more I wonder if there is something else I could be doing to help with his weight gain. The Dr. did not seem overly concerned, which makes me feel a bit better.

  1. Both my babies have always been smaller then the doc's want them to be Ayden was in the 5% rate and Dominic is in the 15% rage for boys their ages. I wouldn't worry about it to much if hes healthy. For some reason doc's these days want fat babies. I personally don't get it. I have only meat one baby that is where doc's say babies should be and hes a BIG BOY!To big if you ask me. My boys are small but healthy and thats all I really care about it. So as long as hes healthy I wouldn't worry to much about it. Easy to say I know cause I still try to this day to plump Ayden up.

  2. Yea I think the Doc said Ryan is in the 25th percentile, so he's not terribly below average. But I'm a mom, so I can't help but worry. =)
